The local currency in Jamaica is the Jamaican dollar sometimes noted as JMD or J$.
Although prices are typically quoted in JMD, most retailers, tour operators, and vendors will accept US dollars. To avoid confusion, make sure you know what dollar unit is being quoted before any transaction is done.
Some places will also consider taking Canadian dollars, British pounds, or euros but that is very rare and you might lose out on the exchange rate.
To avoid a great loss, visit a reputable cambio or a commercial bank to get the best rates.
Money exchange services in Jamaica
Local banks usually offer the best rates in the market. However, they may not be open when you need to utilize their money exchange service.
You may find that cambios are more convenient because they usually have longer opening hours, including weekends.
FX Trader is the largest foreign exchange service provider on the island with 45 locations. They exchange most currencies.
Other reputable money exchange services include:
Grace Kennedy Currency Trading
COK Sodality Cooperative Credit Union
Lasco Financial Services
Scotia Jamaica
You can also check daily exchange rates on the Scotia Jamaica website.
Where Jamaican dollars are only accepted
You may notice that vendors that are lined alongside the roadways or at the market usually prefer to be paid in Jamaican dollars.
It's slightly different at the craft market as these vendors are licensed to provide goods for visitors to the island so they may quote prices in USD.
Also, if you plan to visit one of the smaller restaurants or "cook shops" in the town where you're staying, it's best to have a few single $100 notes in your pocket.
