6 reasons you have to visit Treasure Beach

The jewel of the South Coast is charting high on the new ‘must visit' destinations in Jamaica.

A tour of Treasure Beach will reveal a small fishing village that is slowly transforming into a haven for those who seek a little more unspoilt and rustic setting for their vacation.

There are also some unique off-the-beaten-path excursions along with a popular literary festival, a beautiful boutique brimming with handmade local clothes and crafts, and delicious farm-to-table dining experiences.

So what's not to love? Come with us as we explore Treasure Beach.

Callaloo

French native Sophie Eyssautier’s Callaloo boutique brings a pop of color and Parisian whimsy to this quiet beach town.

Combining years of experience in the Paris fashion industry with the vibrancy of all things Jamaican, her line of island-inspired beach cover-ups, signature handbags, dolls, and colorful household amenities make perfect souvenirs and gifts.

Black River Safari

Nature lovers will delight in this 1 ½ hour boat ride three miles up (and back) the largest navigable river, in the largest freshwater ecosystem in Jamaica and the Caribbean.

“Safari” sightings include a glimpse of some of the 100 species of birds that live in the morass, endangered American Crocodiles, and the giant red mangrove trees (with roots up to 40ft long!) lining the banks.

There are many operators to choose from but none are as established as J. Charles Swaby, whose tour offers a look through a mini museum and also a visit to his “nursery” where you can hold a baby crocodile.

Pelican Bar

Set a quarter of a mile out to sea on a shallow sand bank, Floyd’s Pelican Bar has become one of the most famous in the world.

True to its humble roots, the bar, with its thatch roof and uneven wooden floors propped up by stilts, serves up a basic but satisfying offering of cold drinks.

Enjoy a game of dominoes with local fishermen, snorkeling for conch shells, and a makeshift boardwalk perfect for lounging with friends.

Oh and if you're lucky, the dolphins will stop by to say hi!

YS Falls

Tucked away in an idyllic natural setting, YS’s seven cascading waterfalls plunge through some of the most beautiful flora and fauna on the island.

After traveling inland on a jitney across a working cattle and stud (horse) farm, guests can opt to swing from a rope into the river, zipline across the breadth of the falls, or relax in one of the cabanas next to a spring-filled pool.

Jakes

Inspired by one family’s love affair with Treasure Beach, Jakes is comprised of a colorful collection of assorted cottages and bungalows along the rugged coastline of the small sleepy fishing village.

Designed by multi-hyphenate, self-taught architect Sally Henzell, the property exudes a bohemian funky kind of charm.

It is serviced by friendly staff and is built on the company ethos that promotes sustainable development.

It is the best seafood and pizza spot in the town of Treasure Beach.
